What is doors98.com?

Doors 98 is a Windows 98-style desktop experience built as a personal archive and nostalgia project. Think of it as booting up an old computer from the early 2000s — except it runs in your browser and everything actually works.

On that desktop you’ll find parody apps of software you forgot you used to use — a spyware scanner that finds Gator and Bonzi Buddy, a Winamp clone loaded with early 2000s MP3s, a fake registry hijacker tool, an instant messenger, and more. Alongside that is a deep archive of Final Fantasy fan community history: recovered forum databases, lost downloads and abandonware, AIM buddy icon collections, fan-made RPG games, and stuff that was one dead GeoCities page away from being gone forever.

The forums

There are three ways to visit the old forum, depending on what you’re after:

• The forum, brought back to lifeLive A working revival of the original Ikonboard forum — you can register, log in, and post again. It includes every recovered post from the original board, so the old threads live right alongside anything new.
• November 2002 snapshotArchive A frozen, read-only capture of the forum exactly as it stood in the final backup before the site went offline — Ikonboard 3, 11 forums, 239 topics, 4,167 posts.
• Ikonboard 2.1.9 archiveArchive An earlier chapter of the board, running the older Ikonboard 2.1.9 software, recovered from the Wayback Machine.

The online shop

FinalFantasyFanatic.com helped cover its hosting bills through an affiliate partnership with AnimeNation. That storefront has been rebuilt — soundtracks, arrange albums, sheet music, and collectible figures — using the original product banners, recovered from the November 2002 backup.
